How do you stay fresh when leading worship week after week? Focus on Jesus not yourself
I used to lead worship every Sunday, I’ve led at some of the most amazing churches around, churches of a thousand people or more, churches of 100 or less, churches that met in a home, churches that met in a movie theatre. I did it for about 15 years just about every week, it was the ultimate honor and every Sunday was magical.
How do you stay fresh and filled with passion doing worship in the church with all its potentials ups and downs? It was easy, I stayed focused on the one true God, Jesus Christ, His love and grace.
Then I would listen to every lyric, every song and spend 4-5 hours every week worshipping myself, crying, sometimes dancing in worship to my Savior and King Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Then I would write, write and write some more, I would read Scriptures the Spirit led me to as I worshipped at home, in my office, at work, in the car.
The best times of worship? Listening to the songs as I mopped the kitchen floor, no joke.
Then every Thursday night our worship community would gather to worship and practice songs, go over things, develop friendships, talking, praying, catching up. I would lead us, or someone else would lead us in a short talk on Jesus and His love for us and the world.
Then Sundays were magical, we just worshipped and smiled and cried and felt and were challenge by the Word of God, glad to serve using our skills and talents, years and years of music and singing lessons, years and years of practicing, playing with some of the best musicians on the planet. Yet in those few moments nothing mattered except the presence of the Holy Spirit.
The worship time came and went so quickly, all our imperfections melting into the presence of the King. Sure there were ups and downs but nothing compared to the promise we have in Him.
And weekly, we invited people to come and see the goodness of the Lord, I would say a few words and I could literally feel God changing lives as I spoke, no joke. Lives were changed, people got saved and set free as we sang, I have so many stories of redemption and grace I could not tell them all.
One thing I can say through it all, I never felt happier, more in tune, more surrendered than when we’d worship God together. Be it on Sundays, at home, in the audience or on stage, in a circle or in the lights, the purest name of all is Jesus.
The reason we sing is Jesus, the glory and honor and power belongs only to Him. Now go and worship and serve the poor, the weak, the least, the children, the urban centers, the immigrant, the refugee, the mentally ill.
Give them Jesus, you do it, you are the called people of God, don’t wait, get your life in order, be saved today, don’t waste another day.
Pray with me right now and be saved, confess your sins and accept the forgiveness and grace of Jesus today. #GO!
