church-loneliness-550x550Welcome back. You belong here.
There’s quite a conversation going around some circles regarding Donald Miller‘s post on Why He Doesn’t Worship God By Singing. He then wrote a response to his original post here.
You can also read other responses to Donald’s post here and here.
By the way, I’m a huge Donald Miller fan.
This topic is not new, Rachel Held Evans, a famous Christian blogger, wrote about it here and here, but the topic is back. I think people will continue to talk about this as long as there are churches and people.
I left the church a few years ago but I came back. I’ll write the Top 10 Reasons Why I Left the Church next week. But I wanted to give my Top 10 Reasons Why I Went Back to Church. So here they are:
Top 10 Reasons Why I Went Back to Church:
1. It Was My Pride – I realized how leaving the church was all about me (pride). I felt this, I felt that, I was hurt, those people did this, those people did that. Going to church goes against my pride, it makes me humble, makes me depend on others, makes me realize how average I really am. (1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand”)
2. Amazing Music – I love music, singing, worship, Jesus, experience. And before you think I’m the hand raising, crazy worshipper in church (I like those people!) I’m actually pretty reserved. But I realize that worship is more than singing, more than hand-raising. It’s about being in the presence of God through music, the Eucharist, the Scriptures, baptisms, all that goes into the worship gathering (Colossians 3: 16 “Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.”)
3. Great Speakers – I love good speaking/preaching, I admit I’m not into bad preaching (including my own). But I’ve always been challenged by quality, gifted speakers, men and women who take the Scriptures and challenge me to be humble, kind and serve others. (again, Colossians 3: 16 “Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.”)
4. Humble People – If it was up to me, I’d be alone 4-days a week and come out to play 3x/week. I’m an introvert with extrovert tendencies (50/50) but people are awesome. Yes, they sometimes smell, gossip, eat corn nuts next to me (I don’t like corn nuts). But at the end of the day, people are God’s creation and church is filled with them (even if they smell like corn nuts). (John 13: 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”)
5. Celebrate Recovery – “Hello, my name is David Trig, I’m a faithful believer in Jesus Christ and I deal with fear and anxiety. Hello Trig!” I lead worship at Celebrate Recovery every other week and every time I’m there I feel clean and dirty inside. To hear other people’s stuff makes me realize how filthy I am, but then when I hear of the love of God I realize how clean I can be (Isaiah 61: 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn
that the time of the Lord’s favor has come)

Enjoying these so far? Please come back tomorrow for the rest of my Top 10 Reasons Why I Came Back to Church. See you then!
